Media Industry-Showreels
'A showreel is a short video showcasing a person's previous work used by many kinds of people involved in filmmaking and other media, including actors, animators, lighting designers, editors, and models.' (-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Showreel)
What makes a good showreel?
- Show your latest work-Clients and companies don't want to see work that you have done years ago as it will raise a lot of questions about your skills as a content creator.
- Keep it short-A showreel should be between 1-3 minutes long as potential clients do not have a lot of time to watch what you have to offer.
- Keep it at a good pace-Make sure the pace is fast enough to keep clients attention
- Check all copyright issues-be sure not to use music, dialogue or images if you do not have the owners consent.
Showreel examples
I didn't watch a lot of videos when delving into making a showreel, I just wanted to gather an understanding of what needed to be in it.
The showreel does a good job of capturing what genre the filmmaker tends to film in, allowing us to see his best work on multiple from multiple different media such as advertising, documentary, filmography and photography. It is clear from the showreel that the filmmaker likes to shoot action shots, such as people playing sport or concerts or nature.
The showreel was short and contained updated work, which allows the creator's skills to be highlighted. All the work is extremely well filmed and put together, there is footage that can be seen that looks outdated or under the standard. The showreel is kept at a fast pace, allowing the watcher to be engrossed by each new clip without some of them going on for too long while the music in the background fits with the theme, as the filmmaker films a lot of sports/ action shots- it blends nicely with the video audio.
The showreel does a good job of capturing the genre that the filmmaker specialises in, we get to see the awards that the filmmaker has one and some of their best work from multiple different media such as advertising, short filmmaking and photography. From the showreel, I can tell that the filmmaker likes to shoot drama pieces and short films focusing on family and community.
The showreel is quite outdated however, the work is still to a high standard and encompasses everything the filmmaker does. It is a short showreel and is quite fast-paced, allowing us to see a lot of different shots at once which keeps our interest engaged. Again I think the filmmakers choice of adding a fast pace and quite bassey, it fits nicely with the footage and allows it all to merge together perfectly.
